Make the court email you.

Most fathers never find out that in 34 states a father representing himself can put his own name on the electronic service list in his own case — so every motion the other side files arrives in his inbox the day it is filed, instead of reaching him by mail a week later, or not at all. It is open to either parent — whoever is named in the case, the father or the mother.

And having a lawyer does not shut you out of it. When you are represented, the filings go to your attorney as a matter of course — and asking the attorney to put your own address alongside theirs, or simply to forward what lands, is a reasonable request that costs nothing.

We wrote down how to do it in all fifty states and the District of Columbia: the system your court uses, the steps to register, the rule behind it, and what to do where the door is closed. Nothing to buy, and nothing to sign up for.

Step one, and you can do it today

Get the filings into your inbox in the first place.

In most states a father representing himself can be added to the electronic service list in his own case — which means every motion the other side files lands in his inbox the day it is filed. Most men never find out they can do this.

Here is how it works in your state, whether or not you ever buy anything from us.

Whatever your state: once you are on the list, tell your mail app to allow the sending addresses shown above. Court notices land in spam more often than they should, and a notice you never saw is the whole problem this is meant to solve.

Compiled from each state's own court rules, e-filing portals and self-help material in September 2026. Rules change, and a local court can have its own practice on top of the state rule — check with your clerk before you rely on it. This is information, not legal advice.
